Description
Original Motion Picture Pre-Production Artwork
By
Paul Blaisdell

From the 1957 B-Movie Horror Classic

Tabonga
The Fearsome Tree Creature

During the five year period between 1955 and 1959 Paul Blaisdell worked on more than fifteen horror movies. His work as an actor, creature designer, make-up artist and special effects technician can been seen in such classics as:

  • It Conquered The World
  • The Day The World Ended
  • The She-Creature
  • Attack of the Puppet People
  • Teenage Caveman
Check out The Internet Movie Database for more details on Paul Blaisdell's filmography. An excellent book on the artist is Paul Blaisdell Monster Maker by Randy Palmer.

In 1957 Paul Blaisdell designed the walking tree creature Tabonga for the Milner Brothers film From Hell It Came. The story depicts a South Seas island Prince who is killed with a radioactive knife. After being buried vertically he is resurrected as a walking tree. Check out The Astounding B Monster Archive and The Internet Movie Database for more information on the film. The Blaisdell book also contains some information on the movie including a reference to the creation of the artwork being sold in this auction. The two illustrations available in this auction are part of the original pre-production design work for the movie. The creature is depicted in various poses as described below.

Description of the Artwork

Both pieces are on 15"x20" illustration boards. The actual illustrations are contained in a 11.5"x16" area of the board. This area is marked by pin holes in the corners which are connected by pencil lines. The art was done in colored inks and airbrush techniques. The illustration area has been protected through the years by a sheet of plastic that has been taped to the outer border and is in superb condition as a result. The border has been left unprotected and is marked by tape residue and other signs of age, such as yellowing. Additionally the colors on the artwork are more vibrant than shown by the pictures.

The artwork is on display for the duration of the auction at Creature Features at 1802 West Olive Avenue in Burbank, California. If you are in the area please drop by and take look at these pieces up close.

Piece #1 - ID # PB57001

This illustration depicts the creature in two poses and is signed by Paul Blaisdell.

To the left Tabonga's body is freshly risen from the ground. His eyes are partially opened indicating that he is coming to life. His arms have not yet sprouted from his shoulders. His legs have not yet formed and the bottom of his trunk is attached by roots to the ground. To the right the upper half of Tabonga can be seen from behind. His right hand is balled into a fist. Bullet holes tear down the right side of his body sending pieces of bark flying. Paul Blaisdell's signature is clearly inscribed in the lower-left corner.

Piece #2 - ID # PB57002

This illustration depicts the creature in four poses.

To the left Tabonga is fully emerged from the ground and his limbs are developed. His left hand is curled into a fist and raised. His eyes and mouth are open and he is angry. While not as good as in person, this close up scan reveals the detail of the artwork and brilliance of the colors, even after 42 years. The radioactive knife is fitted with a deathhead and causes green blood to ooze from the creature. Along the bottom the creature is shown in various stages of rising out of the ground.

This artwork has been authenticated by Paul Blaisdell's friend and apprentice, movie archivist Bob Burns. Bob worked with Paul early in his career on such films as It Conquered the World and She-Creature. Having been present when this artwork was produced, Bob has graciously agreed to provide his affirmation that these pieces are authentic Blaisdell originals and that the signature is his. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each of these pieces and bears Bobs notarized signature. Get more information about Bob Burns at The Official Bob Burns Web Site. Click the images of the COAs below for a more detailed view. They are also on display with the artwork at Creature Features for your inspection.

Bob Burns and me 1999

This is your opportunity to own a piece of horror movie history. Very little of Paul Blaisdell's excellent work has survived the years. Making these illustrations quite rare.

The winning bidder will pay $15 for shipping. Insurance is recommended.
